A BARBADIAN attorney-at-law is among a list of international lawyers, consultants and academics slated to address the 16th Oxford Offshore Symposium to be held September 3 to 9.

Dr. Trevor Carmichael, the principal of Chancery Chambers a locally based firm engaged primarily in international business law and environmental law, will be speaking on the future of commercial internationalism. The session will focus on the future of international commerce examining issues ranging from arbitration to extradition and telecommunications to trusts.

The symposium brings together distinguished professionals from across the globe and provides the opportunity for delegates to interact and debate with an international faculty of lecturers, therefore benefiting from their collective knowledge and expertise throughout the duration of the weeklong event.

The event is slated to focus on the challenges confronting the offshore world, centering on law and regulation and also clients and making money.

Such a focus could be instrumental in enhancing Barbados knowledge base and the development of the international business sector. This conference could prove to provide some vital information to a country like Barbados that has a thriving international business sector, which includes a seriously growing offshore sector.

According to Central Bank reports, the international business and financial services received a total of 428 new licences for 2005, compare to 361 and 274 issued in 2004 and 2003 respectively".

As executive director of Barbados International Business Association (BIBA), the sector has much to offer Barbados, and it is through research, improving the knowledge base and accurate measurement that the sector can do more for the economy.

He highlighted that the offshore sector is critical, but it is not the only area of relevance to international business in Barbados.

Other issues that will be covered during the event include, the principles of direct and indirect taxation, an examination of finance centres and discussions of trust and sham trusts in the offshore world.

Other basic topics that will be covered include, examinations of civil law arrangements and partnerships.
