The white ghost ship rolled in the Atlantic swell as the rescue boats approached it 70 nautical miles off Ragged Point, one of the most easterly places on the Caribbean island of Barbados.

The yacht was unmarked, 6m long, and when Barbadian coastguard officers boarded it, they made a gruesome find. The boat's phantom crew was made up of the desiccated corpses of 11 young men, huddled in two separate piles in the small cabin. Dressed in shorts and colourful jerseys, they had been partially petrified by the salt water, sun and sea breezes of the Atlantic Ocean. They appeared to have come from far away.

In defiance of a recent ruling of the World Trade Organization, the House Judiciary Committee in the U.S. today approved two Internet gambling bills that ignore the United States’ commitment to free and fair trade with other countries. Trust Antigua to be amongst the first to make noise in the media and expect to hear more from the Island Nation, as they have a strong case and every reason to continue the fight.

Tax is the driving force behind 'offshore', but for the great majority of well-off individuals considering offshore investment, tax is not directly an issue. They reside in high-tax areas such as the EU, the US, Canada or Japan, they pay their taxes, and if they make 'offshore' investments, it is in pursuit of higher returns, and without any intention to evade taxes in their home countries

Offshore Variable Annuity

QUESTION: I have seen references in various newsletters that one method to legally save taxes offshore is by an investment into an offshore variable annuity. Can you please advise what is the meaning of the word 'variable' ( in IRS terms ) insofar as it relates to interest payable and term of investment.? Does this mean that an offshore fixed term, fixed interest annuity is not a suitable offshore tax saver? Also, can you confirm that interest received from an offshore variable annuity is to be taxed as a dividend by the IRS ?

No one likes to think of his own demise. But in reality, where I virtually think we are, none of us are immortal. Few of us wish to take on the task of estate planning, not only due to the unpleasantness of thinking of our own eventuality, but there is the additional burden of having to sort through the jungle of unfamiliar terms and concepts.

If money makes the world go around, then offshore financial centers (OFC's) are the power outlets for the energy source to keep the globe spinning. Whatever can be said about the negative effects of tax-havens, is overshadowed by the positive benefits that the Information age has had on the planet and a byproduct of the Information Age, or Digital era, as some people call it, is improved trading relationships between the countries of the world.

Globalization is a relatively new word in our lexicon and defined by www.dictionary.com as follows; The tendency of investment funds and businesses to move beyond domestic and national markets to other markets around the globe, thereby increasing the interconnectedness of different markets.

Tax Haven Side Effect

While there's no stopping globalization, or smart people from avoiding taxes, there is another side to the coin, and a major issue that needs to be discussed openly by developed nations, and that's the issues related to tax evasion.

Offshore tax havens, spread by new computing and telecommunications, provide an unprecedented tax shelter, enabling rich citizens and corporations to escape the national tax system. Wealthy tax evaders save millions, while public services and infrastructure in their home countries, as well as on the small island havens, remain drastically underfunded. Tax Haven Countries

Experts on international business and finance say the tax haven countries house more millionaires per square inch than Wall Street. These tax haven nations have deliberately courted the interest and favor of multinational companies and operations. They have, essentially, passed flexible legislation that permits whatever form of organization is required to conduct tax-free or tax-almost-free operations.

The "sovereign democratic federal state" of St. Christopher-Nevis (as its 1983 constitution ceremoniously describes it), has a governmental form and name almost bigger than its population (45,000), and total land area (267 sq. km.).

But this tiny West Indies island nation, known to the natives as "St. Kitts-Nevis," has become very big in certain exclusive international financial circles. That's because Nevis has no taxes, extremely user-friendly incorporation and trust laws, and an official attitude of hearty welcome to foreign offshore corporations and asset protection trusts.
