Intellectual property

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia -

In law, particularly in common law jurisdictions, intellectual property or IP refers to a legal entitlement which sometimes attaches to the expressed form of an idea, or to some other intangible subject matter. In general terms this legal entitlement sometimes enables its holder to exercise exclusive control over the use of the IP.

There's no stopping it, everyday online gambling gets closer and closer to becoming regulated in the United States. International Game Technology (IGT) spent $90 million Wednesday to buy a privately owned Internet gaming provider, presenting the Reno-based slot machine manufacturer its first access to the expanding online gambling market.

Steve Kane's Waltham start-up, GameLogic, was attempting its first high-profile project in the United States, a partnership with Foxwoods Resort Casino that had its quiet launch last Monday. By Friday, Connecticut's Division of Special Revenue had issued a cease-and-desist order, and it seemed like GameLogic's luck had turned sour but that hasn't slowed the industry.

“You don’t know how it feels to be a foreigner in this country, unless you live like one. It is unbearable!” said my Arab scuba diving trainer. I was shocked and since then, I have become more sensitive and observant. Sad to say, he was right. I tell you why.

Before the oil boom of the late ’70s, we lived more like a normal society. We had our rich, middle class and poor, Saudis and non-Saudis, educated and less educated. Mostly, we lived in harmony.

Corporate cash and global greed frolic on sands of the Caymans

The sunny Cayman Islands, by the numbers, are quite a place. The Caymans (population 44,270) are the fifth-largest banking center in the world. More than 65,000 companies are registered there. Some 600 of these are banks and trust companies, holding external assets of $800 billion in U.S. currency -- twice as much as all the banks in New York City have on deposit.

Bermuda Triangle Basics

By Lisa Shea -

Many cruises take a path through the infamous Bermuda Triangle, which spans the ocean between Bermuda, Miami, and Puerto Rico. This area is also known as the Devil's Triangle.

The Bermuda Triangle has many natural hazards. First, it's a large stretch of ocean - someone sailing within it that could not navigate properly could easily get lost. There are many reefs in it. Second, pirates enjoyed hanging out in this area - pillaging and sinking boats. Third, it is right in the middle of the hurricane tracks, making any travel between June and November very risky.

Arrived home in Brasil to catch the breaking scandal...

Will Lula be undone by aides' cash-filled drawers?

RIO DE JANEIRO -- Taking office with such high hopes just over two years ago, the Brazilian government of President Luiz Inacio (Lula) da Silva has been rocked by a corruption scandal that includes tales of political aides sneaking through airports with hundreds of thousands of dollars stuffed in their underwear and corrupt congressmen stopping by the presidential palace each month to pick up their regular payoff.

AS WE'VE WRITTEN a few times over the years, at the heart of America's high quality of life is our system of government, a constitutional republic built on a foundation of individual rights, namely property rights. Many in this country have come to take property rights for granted. But property rights are an anachronism in the socialist dictatorship of Venezuela, where, despite the fact that the country is teeming with oil and natural resources, more than 66% of the population lives below the poverty line, unemployment hovers near 18% and the infant mortality rate is 26 per 1,000 births (compared with seven per 1,000 in the U.S.).

July 4th is Independence Day. But at our picnics, parties and cookouts we might well ask, "Independence from what?"

In 1776 we Americans declared our political independence with Britain. Tired of high taxes and a long train of abuses, and with no democratic controls on those who governed us, we decided it was time for us to run our own affairs. Besides, bowing on our knees before kings and lords was for slaves and serfs, not free men like us. But it was not just our break with Britain but also other manifestations of the virtues of independence that helped us Americans to make this the greatest country on earth.
